I forgot one form (there were two Roth in-plan conversions and I forgot about one of them), and we didn't realize it until after we submitted taxes, so we needed to submit an amendment. We couldn't amend the MN Taxes, amendments aren't open yet for the state. So we'll have to work on that sometime later. The federal amendment reduced my refund by $609, so I had to submit a check for that amount, along with the amendment, by mail. My recharing power bank system (UGreen PD100W Max) arrived. Alex and Julia and I went to Best Buy to get a "charger" (i.e. plug) so that I can plug in the power bank. Julia got a car charger; she'd lost her last one, in New Zealand. Alex and Julia and I went to Pizza Karma -- been a while. Alex and I watched an episode of Blue Bloods, while Julia went to a wine-tasting. Alex shared some candy from Japan with Julia and me. Very busy day. Drove in early to get charging at the U. Plugged in, but, for some reason the charging didn't start, and I didn't notice. It's happened once before, but I did catch it that time. Annoying. Dr Witte's called to let me know that the new essex mouthpice was ready, but asked that I set an appointment to come see Dr Witte. I asked if that was really necessary, and was promised a call back. Worked until about 11am on typing in redmarks on profs / grants. Then gave Maxim a ride to the U. Then went back to profs / grants until about 2:30pm, got a new printout, and then went to meet Maxim to give him a ride home. Then drove over to Dr Witte's and asked again about the essex. Took a long time but the front desk person eventually brought it to me, and I left. Called Alex and he said we could do the oil change a little earlier than we'd planned (3:15pm instead of 4pm). Did the oil change, then he let me plug into his brand new (installed by Adam Wortman yesterday) charger. Went for a 29% off on 2/29 at Buca. I got Penne alla Vodka, he got something with meat. He ended up with lots of leftovers. I gave him my leftovers, not so much. Went back to his place and he put the leftovers in his refrigerator. Then went and picked up Maxim to go see Dune 2. Got parked early enough to go for a short walk on Nicollet Island. Then watched Dune (pretty good!), dropped off Maxim, and went back to Alex's. My car was fully charged. Drove home and have been trying to get ready for bed since. ============================================================== W 2/28/24 Strength, no running, stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Hilda Martinez, chair of the Edina Energy and Environment Commission told us a little about what Edina is doing. New member named Jim, seems likely to engage. Sam Daley-Harris was on the national call. Starting to think about another energy innovation political forum. Did some more marking up of profs / grants. Napped a few minutes in the afternoon. With Julia, watched Endeavour s9e2 "Uniform". The upperclass punks didn't actually kill anyone, though they ran over the illustrator and didn't help him -- he eventually died. The young actor killed by the older one. Bodies found at Blenheim Vale. Illustrator left clues about them. Guy at the shop: David Astin, played by Michael Keene. Older actor Kenny Pryor = Kenneth Sellers (Superintendent Jolyon "Jolly" Jolliphant), played by Kevin McNally. Pryor is stage name, Sellers is birth name. Actor playing DI Chance is Dicky (or Richard), played by Leo Staar. Drunk who was beaten, then killed (turned out to be brother of Kenneth Sellers) is Hugh Sellers. No credit I could find. Young actor is Raymond Swann who plays PC Constable Banks, birth name Raymond Astin brother of David Astin. No credit I could find. Artist is Fred Baynard. No credit I could find. Daughter of Artist is Freya, played by Ayesha Antoine. Sam Thursday played by Jack Bannon. Joan Thursday is played by Sara Vickers. Ronnie Box is played by Simon Harrison, ends up headed to Johannesburg, which I took to mean in South Africa. At the end, Peter Jakes (played by Jack Laskey) shows up. He was one of the abused kids at Blenheim Vale. ============================================================== F 2/9/24 No strength, short run (<10 min), stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Took the 6:45am bus to the U, came back at 3pm with Maxim. Didn't see Bernardo. Worked the entire time on profs / grants. New printout. Still working to get a good example with the BUA (Best University Anywhere). Realized that the sections on rational expected payouts were pointless; can just change units of money to make any rational payout become integral. Restarted Endeavour s8e3 Terminus, for the third and last time. Started marking up profs / grants. Watched a NOVA with Julia about Easter Island = Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui was annexed by Chile in 1888. Population of the island is about 7,750 (2017 census). Large statues called Moais. All were toppled in late 1700s, but have been put upright over recent years. Moai platforms are called ahu. On the NOVA show, a lot of researchers on Rapa Nui are very worried about allowing a Western narrative to describe their history. ============================================================== Th 2/8/24 Strength, no run, stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Spent a little time at the library, reading the economist and the Wall Street Journal. Returned some materials for Julia. 1pm-4pm, volunteered at VEAP, did mobile pantry to Yorktown. Got home about the same time as Julia went to kickboxing. Rewatched Endeavour, Terminus s8e3. Tafferton Park Massacre. Drunk on the bus turned out to be Morse. Need to better understand the English football pool system. Professor Patrick Stanton, played by William Sebag-Montefiore, first one killed, eyes xed out. WYCH=Walsh-Yeager-Churchyard-Hobbs. The letter with WYCH is written to Stanton, seems WYCH plays the role of a return address. Odd because Churchyard is already dead at the time of the mailing. WSW3MA?=When shall we three meet again? (From start of Macbeth.) Prodigy student, who was unfairly put away: Warren Loomis. Cufflinks have code to get into the safe. Bus conductor: Les Grant, played by Adam Ewan. Bus driver: John Peckett, played by Ray Emmet Brown. Linda Travers, played by Anna Burnett, sister of Loomis Hilda Bruce-Potter, played by Marion Bailey, grandmother of Loomis Student Richard Blake, played by Adam Mirsky. Innocent of anything. Percy Walsh, played by Matthew Marsh, part of WYCH. Norbert Hobbs, played by Ben Bishop, part of WYCH Dr Gillian Nicholls, played by Jennifer Kirby. Innocent of anything. Churchyard was killed years before. ============================================================== W 2/7/24 Strength, run, stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Spent a little time at the library making edits to profs/grants Shopping: Got yogurt to pair with amoxicillin. Also some trail mix. 7pm, went to a wine tasting with Ebb&Flow, principal: Matt Scarlett. Watched an episode (#12.1) of Death in Paradise, about an astronomy professor (Betram Sworder) who turns out to be a fraud. Fakes his own death, but then is actually killed by his wife, Miriam. Stole a theory developed by his friend, Jeremy Herbert. Ends with Sophie Chambers kissing Neville Parker. Ralf Little=DI Neville Parker, Shantol Jackson=DS Naomi Thomas, Sarah Woodward=Miriam Sworder, Christopher Villiers=Bertrand Sworder, Amit Shah=Sunil Singh Kirmani. Sunil turned out to be Bertrand Sworder's illegitimate son. Grad student (Sally Blake, played by Alexandra Moloney) with crush on Bertrand Sworder seems to have had nothing to do with anything. Ginny Holder=Training officer Darlene Curtis. ============================================================== Tu 2/6/24 Short run (10 mins), no strength, stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Working on antibiotics and mouth rinse. Getting used to retainer system in mouth. Feels much better without it. Caught 6:45am bus to U. Finished typing in edits, printed. Then edited last 15 pages, reprinted those. Then repeated that process. Breakfast (oatmeal) at Starbucks, then lunch (egg and cheese protein box) at Starbucks. At home, Progresso corn chowder, yogurt, more antibiotics. Need to finishe one more antibiotics (500 mg pills, 3 pills per day). Need to do mouth rinse once more. (Chlorhexidine 0.12% rinse, 15ml twice per day.) ============================================================== M 2/5/24 Run, strength juggling, stretch, tongue, flash cards. Tooth extraction at 8:30am. dental. Filled prescription, now on antibiotics (amoxicillin 500 mg 3 x daily). Also, a mouth rinse. Shopping: yogurt because of the antibiotics. Also got lots of progresso corn chowder. Very good Also, some ice cream. Julia finally went to urgent care, got antibiotics. Lots of work on typing edits to profs/grants. Put in the code that Chris Prouty sent to me. In an appendix. Watch Morse Terminus s8e3 finale. Snowstorm various people ended up at an old hotel where there was a mass killing eight years earlier. Started an episode of All creatures Great and Small, but only watched a few minutes of it. ============================================================== Su 2/4/24 Run, no strength, juggling, stretch, tongue, flash cards. Library was closed and my usual Starbucks closed down permanently. Went to People's Organic -- very expensive, though. Worked on redmarks to profs/grants. Read to the end of a chapter in US Grant's autobiography. About 80% finished with the book. Called roster members. Sent reminder of meeting, announcing the book exchange and the pass-the-hat for Eco Expo. Scheduled calling reminder messages for this week. Chris Prouty sent me the code he used to do his computations, and I will put it into an appendix tomorrow. Finished my last time through Endeavour "Sherzo", and watched Meet the Press today. Otherwise just a quiet day. Tooth extraction at 8:45am tomorrow. Plan to meet Hawon and Taesung a week from today, in Mpls. ============================================================== Sa 2/3/24 Strength, no run. Juggling, stretch, tongue, flash cards. Feeling much better today. Julia sounds terrible, but that's been true for weeks. No time for library today. Spent most of the afternoon at Loppet, engaging with people about climate, at a CCL tabling event. Met a very interesting person, Lee Dilley, who lives in Northfield. Hope he can speak to our chapter sometime -- he's a Retired Peace Corps Volunteer, like Paul Thompson, who was also at the table. Lee knows a lot about regenerative ag, and has also spent some time doing homebuilding and home restoration. He owns a small farm which he, I think, leases out to someone else. He helps his tenant with the farming, so he gets to practice regenerative techniques. He's installed heat pumps both on his regular home and on the farmhouse. High quality and oversized (150%). Multi-speed. His balance point is around 10 degrees, he said. Very knowledgeable person. Chris Prouty figured out all the blanks in profs/grants related to Boltzmann computations. I need to take him out for dinner. April. I've been making redmarks to profs/grants. Hope to spend a lot of time on it in the morning tomorrow. Monday: Tooth extraction at 8:45am. ============================================================== F 2/2/24 No gym, running or strength. No juggling. Stretch, tongue, flash cards. Alex made it to Hokkaido today. Drove on the left, while tired, in snowy conditions. Safe so far, though. Spent the day at the U, took the 6:45am bus in and the 3:48pm bus back. Maxim couldn't meet me because of his internship. It's 9:30pm, and he's still out. Lots of edits to profs/grants. Had to catch some shuteye, though -- just very tired. Had egg and cheese protein box and a croissant, before heading home. Met Chris at McCormicks Pub and Restaurant on Wayzata Bay in Lake Mtka. His boy (Bertrand) is showing some signs of oddity, but only in pre-K, so there could be a lot of changes. Girl in 2nd grade. Wife (Sharon) works at Ameriprise. We spent most of the time talking about profs and grants. He coded up the computations for the BUA on Earth-inaccessible-cardinal. As it turns out: 43% of profs have 0+0, while 0.01% of profs have 4+4. Weight is okay, a little over 156 right now. ============================================================== Th 2/1/24 No gym, running or strength. Juggling, stretch, tongue, flash cards. Got to the gym for shower today. Tomorrow going to the U, but, on Saturday, will hope to get back to usual, with strength training. Sore throat is almost gone. I can just barely feel it when I swallow, but even the little tickle is going away. Went for long walk today around the neighborhood. Julia not feeling well, so she stayed home. Signed up for Loppett on Saturday. Will table. Wrote to Yael Karshon about her recent talk at the UMN Colloquium. Proposed an answer to a question about the Sikorski differential structure of an irrational line on the torus. Typed in more edits to profs/grants. Will print tomorrow. Current weight: 156.4. ============================================================== W 1/31/24 No gym. No running or strength. No juggling. Showered at home. Stretch, tongue, flash cards. Sore throat update: Felt awful in the morning and most of the early afternoon. Started to improve in the late afternoon. Spent a lot of time just resting. Julia and I went for a short walk around the neighborhood and I was feeling much better by the time we got back, and I went for a second short walk on my own, again, just around home. Not hoarse ... yet. Just started to feel a little tickle in my throat again. Weight was way down in the morning: 153.4. Ate a lot today, and it was at 159.8 at about 6pm, but I stopped eating then. It's now around 159.4. Canceled plans to go to the U and to get together with Alex for lunch. Didn't want to infect him. Shopping: Got some soups. Particularly liked Amy's Tom Kha Phak. About $4/can at L&B's. Also, gallon of milk, a lot of toothpaste, and a chocolate mousse yogurt. Crest pro-health (with stannous fluoride) was on sale. Finished Endeavour "Sherzo", and started one last time through it. Typed in a few more edits to profs/grants. ============================================================== Tu 1/30/24 Still sick, sore throat. A little more energy, though. No gym. No running or strength. No juggling. Did do stretch, tongue and flash cards. Weight got under 155 just before dinner. Now it's around 156.4. I only went outside for a few seconds, to get the mail. Finished Endeavour, Scherzo for the second time. Watched an episode of All Creatures Great and Small. New vet, Richard Carmody is classic nerd stereotype, offending people for no reason, but knows everything. Watched a couple of segments from 60 Minutes. One about the disarray at the Bureau of Federal Prisons. The other about Interpol. Snowman protest got canceled for lack of snow -- ironic. Interesting travel article in the newspaper with Linda Ronstadt's recommendations for Tucson. Typed up to p. 41 of the redmarks for profs/grants. Will do a little more before bed. ============================================================== M 1/29/24 Was very sick yesterday, sore throat, no energy. I used to say that I never get sick, and that was true for decades, but maybe things are changing. I basically laid in bed the whole day yesterday, except to take medicine and gargle and snort listerine to combat nasal congestion. Same thing today. I did go to the gym today, but didn't work out. Yesterday I didn't do any of my usual activities. Today I did Stretch, flash card, tongue, juggling. Spent just a little time working on redmarks to profs/grants. Watched Meet the Press. Rewatched part of s8e2 "Scherzo". Micah 5:15 "And I will execute vengeance with anger and fury aupon the heathen such as they have not heard." Isaiah 1:18: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool". Went for a long walk, over an hour. Weight is down to near 156. Hopefully below 156 tomorrow. We'll see if I'm up for a run tomorrow. Set up plans to meet with Rich Reardon and Steve Barbo on the 13th, at Caspian Bistro at 12noon. ============================================================== Sa 1/27/24 Run, no strength. Stretch, flash cards, tongue, juggling. No time for library. 12noon, Visited Mom and Sally for lunch (waffles and orange slices). Talked a lot about Adam and his family, about travel to MT, about Alex going to Japan. Quiet time at home. Rested for an hour or so. Trying to avoid eating. Weight down to 161, and want it below 160 by the end of the weekend. Some redmarks on profs/grants. Started LTE about Community Solar, telling my point of view. Big changes being proposed to the subscription process, maybe even ending it. Watched Endeavour s8e2 "Scherzo". Cab dispatcher saw his daugter in a blue film, went after the people who were involved in making the film. Silly thing: semaphore clues with her name in Welsh. Not sure why the episode is called "Scherzo". ("a vigorous, light, or playful composition, typically comprising a movement in a symphony or a sonata") Boy who's father is the cabby that was shot at the start is named Mark, played by Regan Garcia. Maxim with friends tonight, but expect to see him tomorrow morning. ============================================================== F 1/26/24 No strength, no run. Stretch, flash cards, tongue, juggling. Caught 6:45am bus to the U. Oatmeal at Starbucks. No lunch with Bernardo, he suggested next week. Worked all day on profs/grants writeup. Didn't think about whether low information for average events works in L^1. Napped for about 45 minutes in my office. Heard from Mike Myhrom that no one took up his activation project. Invited him to join CCL. 3pm, rode home with Maxim. 6pm, met Alex at India Spice House in EP. (Jon Cheng says it's #1 Indian in Twin Cities.) Then got headlights for Julia and installed them. Also ordered batteries and made reservations for an airbnb near Bozeman, MT. Watched a couple of episodes of Journeys in Japan. Had tea. Chatted with Maxim. Pretty tired. ============================================================== Th 1/25/24 Strength, no run. Stretch, flash cards, tongue, juggling. No time to go to the library. 11:30am-2:30pm, VEAP, Van Driver 1. Rewatched "Prelude" (s9e1) Endeavour. The co-leader killed the leader, in spite of being BFFs. Put an allergen (nuts) on her rosin. Mickey Flood and the young man killed at the start both remain mysteries. Collin Dexter is the salesperson at Burridges. At the start, Morse is just back from Lyme Regis where he has been working on his alcolhol problem. Co-leader: Mabs Portman played by Iogen Daines. Madame Belasco played by Jane Lapotaire. Visiting soloist Christina Poole, played by Kirstin Louie. Leader Margeaux Quicnannon played by Tamsin Newlands. Leader and Co-leader, as kids, in 1949, persuaded another girl (Rose Garland) at Belasco academy to commit suicide. Not sure who plays Rose Garland. Ronnie Box played by Simon Harrison, is a PI in this episode. 6pm, Unmapped, met with Michael Tate to chat. Lots of fun. He's still running -- funny story about coming in first only to find that a female, who started 3 minutes later, finished 2 minutes behind him, so she got a better time than he did. He's got a spot at the Hawaii Ironman. Divorcing, new partner, moving to Mpls. Still works for Great River Energy, works on telecommunications between various energy producing systems. We saw Cwod at Unmapped, spent a little time chatting with him. ============================================================== W 1/24/24 No run, no strength. Went to the U, 6:45am bus. Stretch, flash cards, tongue, juggling. Worked on profs / grants. Typed up some of the countably infinite case. Took out inverse limits. Thought more about whether low information for average events works in L^1, but no solution. 12noon, met Steve Barbo for lunch. He paid, like always. Came home on 3:45pm bus. Started rewatching s9e1 "Prelude" Endeavour. Unclear how the young man at the start died. Unclear about Mickey Flood. ============================================================== Tu 1/23/24 Run, no strength, tongue, stretch flash cards, juggling. Library: Thought a little about whether low information for average events works for all L^1 variables. Still unsure. Glanced at economist, then ran out of time. 1:30pm, met Greg Olson and talked about LTEs. Planning to reduce and rewrite the one I wrote to MinnPost and then submit to the Daily. Also thinking about writing a response to the 22 Jan article in the Strib "A community solar plan would save Xcel customers money - but cost some cities and schools millions". Used street-view to drive around Eureka MT. Sounds as if we'll keep a home base near Bozeman. Tried to get a pass to Yellowstone, but they need the licence plate number, and we'll be renting. Will call tomorrow to see if there's a way around that. Will see Steve Barbo tomorrow. Made plans to get together with Michael Tate on Thursday. Hope to see Alex on Friday to finish some more MT planning. Finished rewatching s8e1 "Striker". Two murders, and a third attempted murder thwarted. First was to silence blackmailer (killing secretary with a bomb). Second was jealousy. Third was politics. Second and third both involved George Sellars as the killer or attempted killer. Julian Moore-Cook as Jack Swift the striker, and target of the attempted murder (third). Sara Vickers as Joan Thursday. Angus Yellowlees as John Sarson, nerdy guy with crush on blown-up secretary. He was a total red herring, except that he did notice someone leaving her office early in the morning. Killian Coyle as George Sellars who was the killer / attempted killer in the second and third cases. Joseph Millson as Robert Fenner who left the bomb for the secretary. Secretary Maggie Widdowson played by Mia McCallum. NOTE: Sue Widdowson was a central character in Last Bus to Woodstock. Coincidence? I suppose. Watched s9e1 "A prelude to the end" of Endeavour. Violinist killed via nut allergy; nuts added to her rosin by girl who knew her since childhood. They persuaded another girl to kill herself. Need to go back to watch s8e2 (Scherzo) and s8e3 (Terminus). ============================================================== M 1/22/24 Strength, no run. Tongue, stretch, flash cards, juggling. No time to go to library, yesterday or today. Maybe tomorrow. Watched a little more of Eneavour, "Striker", 3rd time through. Will finish this time and delete. 11:45am, left to go to Stillwater to look at the Snowsculpting Championship. The competition was this past weekend, but the sculptures will be up for several more days. My favorite was "Unmasked", a person taking off a mask, with tears. Somehow, though, it didn't win a prize. Weight keeps going up. 163. May need to start running every day again. Took away the induction cooktop. Not sure what I'll do with it, but it doesn't seem to work any better than the stovetop. I boiled water in 5 minutes, 30 seconds on the stovetop, compared to 6 minutes on the induction cooktop. ============================================================== Su 1/21/24 Run, no strength. Tongue, stretch, flash cards, juggling. 1:15pm, met at Emily's with Madhu, Julia, Alex and Maxim. Took the induction system 6 minutes to boil the usual amount of water. Will time it again with the regular system. Starting to learn about stable distributions, to get a sense of generalizations of the Central Limit Theorem. Never enough time. Re-watched the end of the Endeavour episode "Striker", then restarted it. This'll be my third time through, and I should more or less understand it. Then on to s8e2. ============================================================== Sa 1/20/24 No run. Strength, stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. At library: economist and a little on profs/grants. Induction cooktop arrived, seems to work as advertised. Probably more efficient than regular cooking, but I'm not sure that it's faster, using the pans that we have. https://www.aceee.org/files/proceedings/2014/data/papers/9-702.pdf indicates that, with properly sized cookware, induction is *less* efficient than coils. (EPRI=Electric Power Research Institute) 1:15pm, donated blood. 2:30pm, met Alex at Chipotle. Then we went for a drive in my car, while his charged. Then we spent some time on Journeys in Japan from NHK World-Japan (Nippon Hoso Kyokai). We also talked a little about MT plans. Considering just having a home base near Bozeman. I also found some info about the old homestead. Will print it on Tuesday, if I'm at the U. Alex left a little before 8pm. ============================================================== F 1/19/24 No running or strength. Went to the U, caught 6:45am bus, and returned with Maxim. Bernardo probably didn't come in to his office today, didn't see him. Wrote a message, though. Stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Worked a lot on profs / grants, esp. the case of degeneracies. Next step: countably infinitely many states. May add a section for the nondegenerate case, bdd below but with infinitely many energy levels. Wrote a small section on inverse limits, to mention Ising models. Watched an episode of All Creatures Great and Small. Set in Yorkshire, in N England. Written by Alf Wight under pen name James Herriot. Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon. Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot. Rachel Shenton and Helen Herriot (ne\'e Alderson). Anna Madeley as Mrs Audrey Hall, housekeeper. This episode had Siegfried hiring a manager who didn't like animals, then having to let her go. (She said she quit.) Little exercise today, but trying to lower weight. Came in at 163.3, but was down to 160.8 by dinner time. Now a little over 161. Considering going back to strength and running on the same day. ============================================================== Th 1/18/24 Running, no strength. Stretch, tongue, flash cards. Only did alternating under legs juggling, no time for the rest. At the library, a little work on profs / grants, and a little time reading the new Economist. Had to leave quickly to get to oral surgery consult. 12pm, dental, Oral surgery consult. Will try an implant. Tooth removal scheduled for M 5 Feb. 4:30pm, Los Amigos. Talked a lot about the IRA's focus on underground CO2 sequestration. 7pm, Town Hall with Steve, Laurie, Carlie. Laurie announced retirement after this session. ============================================================== W 1/17/24 Strength, no running. Stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. At library, a few red marks on profs / grants, and some time looking over some Economist magazines. Reasonable sleep, but still not great. Maybe 5-6 hrs. Worked through Wednesday finances, not a payday. Lots of time on the phone, trying to understand the new system for reporting flex spending claims. Also found out that the debit card from HSABank is for our FSA, not for an HSA. HSABank is just the name of the company. Call 844-650-8936 if difficulties. Steve Barbo contacted me by email -- we'll get together this coming Wednesday, I think. 3pm-5pm, Unmapped, played "Pandemic" a coop game, with Rod and Jon. We beat the pandemic. Dinner at Chipotle, weight is up, 162. Started typing in red marks to profs / grants. ============================================================== Tu 1/16/24 No running or strength. Stretch, tongue, flash cards. For juggling, only did the juggling under alternating legs. Got almost no real sleep last night. Drove in to the U for my dental cleaning. Made a few small edits to profs / grants. Dozed off just a little in my office. Gave Maxim a ride to his classes, since I was using the parking ramp. Went to my dental appt, then gave Maxim a ride back to his home and then drove home. Rewatched just a little of Endeavour, Striker, s8e1. Just too tired. Feel asleep for a couple of hours. Hope I can sleep tonight. Not such a productive day. Weight is up, too just over 160. :-( ============================================================== M 1/15/24 Did running, no stength. Tongue, stretch, juggling, flash cards. Small amount of time at the library, a few redmarks on profs/grants. Alex arrived about 11:30am and spent most of the day with him. He swapped the failed battery on Julia's car (cost: $153). Then the three of us went to Smith Coffee. Then watched some "Journeys in Japan", since Alex will be traveling to Japan in a couple of weeks. Then he and I went to Pizza Luc\'e. Then we watched some Blue Bloods. Also, got a ride in his Tesla, for the first time. Had some wine. He and I also talked a little about the trip to MT in June. I'd like to go to Eureka to see where my mother's father grew up. My mom should get me some information about that. He left around 8pm, and I've been getting ready for bed since then. ============================================================== Su 1/14/24 Did strength, no running. Tongue, stretch, juggling, flash cards. Spent some time at the library, did a little redmarking of profs / grants. Got caught up on email, finally. Julia is trying to cover the damage to the rental car through her Capital One credit card insurance. It'll be interesting to see if that works. Ordered an induction single cooktop ($70, after tax) -- we'll see if we use it much. I *think* it should work with our current teakettle, because magnets stick to the bottom of it. Ferromagnetic materials include iron and nickel, both of which are in stainless steel. (Steel = iron + carbon) (Stainless steel typically is steel + chromium + nickel). Chromium is not ferromagnetic. Ferrous means "with iron", although some people seem to use ferrous to mean ferromagnetic, and might say that nickel is a ferrous metal. Colloquially, ferromagnetic is called magnetic, and magnetic materials are the ones that are attracted to a permanent magnet. Permanent magnet vs magnetic material: Read about hysteresis. Ferrite = iron + other metals. Hysteresis is the dependence of the state of a system on its history. Need to learn about "hysteresis loops". Also, "remanence". Also, "Curie temperature" and "coercivity". Some ferromagnetic elements: iron, cobalt, nickel, neodymium, samarium, dysprosium, holmium The last four are rare-earth = lanthanides, with yttrium and scandium Went out to G&S for dinner. Watched most of the Timberwolves game, against LA Clippers, they were ahead when we headed home, and we found out later that they did win, rah! Alex says he'll come visit tomorrow, on his way back from Litchfield. ============================================================== Sa 1/13/24 Back from New Zealand on Th the 11th. Been too busy to write the last two days. Flew to Auckland, departing on 26 Dec arriving on 28 Dec, but crossed the International Date Line so that added a day. The whole trip was on the north island (Te Ika-a-Maaui). Did not go to South Island (Te Waipounamu). Stayed at the Auckland Rose Park Hotel in Auckland, Th 28 Dec to Sa 30 Dec. Stayed at the Heads Hokianga in Opononi, Sa 30 Dec to Su 31 Dec. Big Pohutukawa tree (New Zealand Christmas Tree) Opononi is N of Auckland on the W side of NZ. On the way to Opononi we stopped in to see Kauri Forest and went to the Kauri museum. Lots of info about Kauri gum. Stayed at BK's Pohutukawa Lodge in Whangarei, Su 31 Dec to M 1 Jan. Very basic hotel, not even breakfast. Lucky to find a place open on New Year's Day. Whangarei is a little S of Opononi on the E side of NZ. Pohutukawa is the New Zealand Christmas Tree. It was in full bloom while we were there. Saw several of them. (Also, lots of Australian Magpies.) Stayed at the 18th Ave Thermal Motel in Tauranga M 1 Jan to Tu 2 Jan. Tauranga is S of Auckland on the E side of NZ. Stayed at the Ambassador Thermal Motel in Rotorua, Tu 2 Jan to W 3 Jan. Rotorua is S of Tauranga a little E of the center but inland. Between Rotorua and Taupo, near Taupo, Orakei Korako: geothermal park on the Waikato River, boat dropped us off at the springs and we explored, met the boat to come back to the other side of the river. Stayed at the Cottage Mews Motel in Taupo, W 3 Jan to F 5 Jan. Mews -- style of housing based on living above stables with horses Taupo is on the large Lake Taupo, S of Rotorua in the center. Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings in Lake Taupo. Stayed at the Edgewater Motor Lodge in Napier, F 5 Jan to Sa 6 Jan. Napier is S of Rotorua on the E side of NZ. Went to vineyards near Napier. Stayed with Adam and Misbah in Reikorangi, Sa 6 Jan to W 10 Jan. Reikorangi is near Wellington, near the south end of the N island. Stayed at the Sylvia Park Motel near Auckland, W 10 Jan to Th 11 Jan. Incredible trip. Highlight was a Maori performance by a family at their compound in Taupo. Also tried the hot mineral waters at a couple of the hotels, but it can be very hot, and it's very smelly. In Wellington we, visited their Botannic Gardens. In Wellington, also went to the Te Papa museum which is huge. Learned that Adam and Misbah moved to NZ after doing a cost-benefit analysis. Part of it centered on avoiding cold slippery weather. Nothing about getting away from the US Govt and its secrets, although Adam did work on security for NASA before they left. Cyclone knocked down their trees a couple of years ago, so they've logged them and are selling the firewood. Will replant. The have a goat named Billy who liked to butt with people for fun. Also a couple of cows. They've stopped raising chickens. Maya was there for the first night. She's in school in Dunedin (dunEEdin) Studying Clinical Psych at the University of Otago in Dunedin, close to the south end of the South Island. Maha is becoming a lawyer, lives in Auckland. Didn't see her. She's at the University of Auckland, Law. She seems to be very well connected, politically, and has been climate active, but needs to figure out how to balance that against developing a career. Misbah is Deputy Principal at Onslow College, a high school. Teaches math. Adam does IT consulting work, but I forget for whom. Decided to move out of security, does systems architecture now. Also earning a lot by logging. They rent out a small house that's on their property. While we were there, on the 8th, Julia got a text from Danya that their father, Ivan, died. Very sad. Back on Th the 11th. Maxim met us at the airport, gave us a ride home. After getting back, have spent a lot of time digging through email. Slowly getting over jet-lag. Went to the U on Friday. Added information about degeneracy to profs and grants. Also started adding information about infinite sets of states. Went to the gym on Saturday (today), running slow and steep, 15 minutes. No strength. Did juggling, flash cards, tongue, stretch. Then to Starbucks, made redmarks on profs and grants. Greg Jason ran the CCL chapter meeting today. Very well organized. Some hope to do something like an Environmental Voter Project, but here in MN. I got in touch with Mike Myhron to see if he could give some advice. Plans for LTE Writing Party on Tuesday 23 Jan, West Metro Home Remodeling fair on Sunday 25 Feb, Straw House tour on Saturday 9 March, Eco Expo on Saturday 20 April. The DFL Convention is also on Saturday 20 April and Claude is looking at tabling there; I might help. Julia's car battery died but AAA got it started. Hope no damage to the battery. She ran some errands and it started a few times, but we'll see about overnight. Made plans to see Madhu on the 21st for lunch. Sent message to Gary Hatfield, maybe another get-together. Tonight we watched Endeavour (s8e1 Striker). Feel asleep, need to watch it again. About sectarian violence in Oxford related to the Troubles in Ireland. While in NZ, at one of the Museums, saw a model of Cook's HMS Endeavour, after whom Endeavour Morse is named. Caroline O'Neill plays Win Thursday, Abigail Thaw plays Dorothea Frazil. James Bradshaw plays Max DeBryn. Julian Moore-Cook plays the footballer (striker) Jack Swift. ============================================================== M 12/25/23 Christmas Day. This will be the last entry until my return from New Zealand. Get back on 11 January, but might not write that day. No strength or running -- community center closed for Xmas. Did do flash cards, juggling, stretch and tongue. Maxim and I went to my mom's for lunch. (Left at 11:30am.) Alex was there. He's bought a Tesla Model Y, hopes to install Level 2 charging in his garage, but needs to talk to the association. Hope it works out. G&S might buy his Ioniq. Finished typing in my redmarks to profs/grants, and printed out the new verison -- will take along to NZ. Everything was closed today, and it was very rainy, so just stayed in. Watched S7E3 of Endeavour, titled Zenana. (Zenana, in India and Iran, is the part of the house for the seclusion of women.) Violetta Talenti played by Stephanie Leonnidas, who, in addition to acting, wrote children's books. Violetta shot by Ludo, Ludo shot by Thursday. Lots of people, including Mrs Bright, killed in accidents that were arranged by people working for Ludo. Copycat killer (whistling the wrong song) was David Clemens, keep fit fanatic at the Morris plant, who found Molly Andrews. Clemens whistles "In Dublin's fair city", also known as "Molly Malone" or "Cockles and Mussels"). Carl Sturgis, the original killer, would whistle "Antonio" aka "Oh! Oh! Antonio" aka "Jos\'e Antonio" aka "Caballo de paso" (in the tondero style from Peru). The cook, Tony Jakobssen, was killed by Carl Sturgis, but I'd like to see that scene again, because there was a woman involved, and I'm not sure what happened to her. ============================================================== Su 12/24/23 Ran steep and slow, for 19 minutes. No strength. Juggling, flash cards, stretch tongue. At the library, I did a little more redmarking of profs/grants. Back at home, started typing up the redmarks. Watched s7e2 ("Raga") of Endeavour. Ends with him seduced by Violetta Talenti (played by Stephanie Leonidas), and something more happening on the towpath. Fred Thursday (Roger Allam) keeps following Carl Sturgis (aka Johnny Linden, played by Sam Ferriday). "It's the boyfriend, I know it is, I can feel it in my corns". Ryan Gage plays Ludo Talenti. Gary Rogers (aka Gary Radowicz, played by William Allam) is killed. Mother, Hazel Radowicz, played by Rebecca Saire, who in real life is Roger Allam's wife. She also appears in "Colours". Christmas Eve! Spent the evening out at my mom's pumpkin (squash?) soup, cranberries, Christmas log, ham (for others), wild rice. We brought champagne. Presents: AAA membership, coffee card. I gave my mom the latest EPCC shirt. ============================================================== Sa 12/23/23 Strength, no running, flash cards, juggling, stretch, tongue. Library: Made redmarks on profs / grants. Also read NY Times and Economist. Also picked up an item for Julia. Shopping: More milk, cheese, yogurt, Amy's. Fixed some popcorn and watched about half of Endeavour "Raga" (s7e2). DS Morse played by Shaun Evans. Fred Thursday played by Roger Allam. William Allam, Roger Allam's son, has his acting debut as Gary Rogers, a kid susceptible to the racist rantings of the politican Martin Gorman (played by Jason Merrels). Gary Rogers mother, a hairdresser names Hazel Radowicz, is played by Rebbeca Saire. Went for a short walk around the neighborhood, on my own. Julia went to the community center to spend time with her friend there. Some swimming and sauna. Watched the movie "Boy A" with Andrew Garfield and Shaun Evans. Andrew Garfield's first movie. Very well acted, well written. Very disturbing. ============================================================== F 12/22/23 Caught early bus to the U. No strength or running. Did stretch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Did a little work in my office on the Xmas letter. Wrote up letter of recommendation for Ms Xiaohan Zhu, and submitted it to a few places. Didn't know her that well -- she didn't come to office hours and didn't write messages. Got an "A-", and was a pretty good student, with a lot of ambition. Starbucks: Yogurt, then egg and cheese protein box. Worked on pts of density. Caught a nap in my office. 12noon, met Bernardo for lunch, at the Tea House. Spent the rest of the time (at the U) working on profs / grants. 3pm, caught a ride with Maxim back to EP. Did some shopping. More Amy's, a deal on popcorn, more yogurt, more walnuts, some petroleum jelly, two Centrum vitamins for 50+. Another short nap at home. Worked more on on profs / grants. Julia and I watched Lucy Worsley discuss Agatha Christie. Much of the episode focused on Christie's disappearance. Finished talking about her divorce and, after it, her travels to the Orient. Finished up Xmas letter, and posted it. Took all the earlier letters and posted them, too, so now we have a full archive, going back to 1996. (Somehow I didn't get a 2006 letter written.) ============================================================== Th 12/21/23 Quiet day, but a lot to do. Ran slow and steep, for 17 minutes. No strength. Juggling, flash cards, stretch, tongue. In the morning, Julia worked on our travel documents. Mostly ready, but a few things need to be done in the last 24 hours. Passports are uploaded. Got a message about an explanation of benefits and spent over an hour figuring out what it was about. Turned out to be informing me that I'll pay $35 for the office visit to see Dr Patrick Morris in sports about my knee. I already knew that. Very annoying. Set up some tentative plans with Katie Jones to see her Straw House, a Passive House. Looped in Nicola. Tried to get gift cards for Buca, but they now require me to use an app called inKind, and I didn't like it so I asked for a refund, which, evidently was granted. I'll have to check my credit card in a couple of days. Got all my medications organized for travel, except the antibiotic Cephalexin. Spent a little time at the library, but only looked at Strib and The Economist. Haircut. 4:30pm, Zoom with Fernando. Talked a lot about Bernardo, who may be going through a rough patch. Also discussed New Zealand. Finished redmarking profs/grants. In the evening, with Juila, watched Endeavour "Oracle" one more time. Then a little bit of 60 minutes. First segment about Gaza hostage release efforts. Second one was about plundering of art in Cambodia in the 1970s, 1980s, and earlier. Also about efforts by the Cambodian government to get the artworks (from temples) back. Tooth is feeling much better, probably because of antibiotics. ============================================================== W 12/20/23 Busy day again. strength, no running, tongue, stretch, flash cards, juggling. At EPCC: Lois. Also Pravin. after EPCC went to Caribou on Shady Oak and worked a little on profs/grants. 8am met Vic for breakfast at Yum. With Kristi, he goes to Dallas, then on to San Diego, leaving on the 5th. Will visit Lydia in Dallas. Kristi will fly back from San Diego and he'll stay there for the semester. Took Julia back to MSP airport so she could file a complaint to get her bag fixed. Then we went for a walk on Pike Island in Ft Snelling State Park. Got an appointment for consultation on Th 18 January, soon after returning from NZ. Will see Dr Timothy J Neuner DDS about oral surgery: removing tooth 25 and eventual implant. I wish I could put some money in flex spending to cover this. Did net worth. Retirement: made $1M in 2020 and another $1M in 2021. Lost $1M in 2022. Gained $1M in 2023. Tomorrow, will transfer just $10,000 by in-plan Roth conversion. Just want to see the effect on taxes. Next year, I might do more. Also tomorrow: haircut, annual letter. ============================================================== Tu 12/19/23 Busy day again. Drove in to school because of late afternoon dental appointment. Worked most of the day on profs/grants, new printout is looking pretty good. More redmarks. Plan to run back in tomorrow for yet another printout, and to do letters of recommendation. 9am, Promotion meeting, run by Jasmine Foo, with Peter Webb, Dmitri Bilyk, Lisa Evans. 4:30pm, dental appt, Dr Witte. He described how my rate of production of root is not keeping up with the rate of destruction. Will have to have tooth (tooth #25) removed, root canal and an implant. Process will probably take about a year. He gave me a referral to an oral surgical team, same one that did Maxim's wisdom teeth. Will call tomorrow. Also now taking a prophylactic antibiotic. 40 pills, 500mg Cephalexin. Says 4 pills per day, but that would only last 10 days. Will call Witte for clarification. Didn't see Vlad Karassev at the get-together at Boom Island Brewing, so I sent him a message to see if he's interested in the data analyst offer. (Later Vlad indicated he'd like to help, and I connected him with Ricky Bradley, CCL's Senior Director fo Information Technology.) Dinner at Noodles. Then went to CVS to pick up my cephalexin prescription. ============================================================== M 12/18/23 Busy day. No strength or running. tongue, stretch, flash cards, juggling. Mouth continues to feel bad. Happy to see dentist at 4:30pm tomorrow. Worked at the U to get new printouts of annual letter and profs/grants. Started redmarking profs/grants. Made changes to pts of density, but decided to stop editing it. That one is done for now. Will go in to the U tomorrow (by car) and will continue working on profs/grants until dental appt. Met Alex and we went to metal recycling, then to Punch Pizza. He won't be able to come on Christmas Eve, but maybe will see him on Christmas morning. 7pm CCL meetup at Boom Island Brewing Company. Paul and Mindy were there, Nicola brought her family. Kids are into math. Greg Jason and Greg Olson were there, too. Also Cecilia. At about 8pm, Julia texted that she'd landed, so I went an picked her up. Got back home around 9. Time for bed. ============================================================== Su 12/17/23 Quiet day, finally. Watched Old Dads (a Bill Burr movie), with Maxim. Not very good. One-note theme, hard to root for anyone in the movie. Everyone a caricature. Run, no strength, tongue, stretch, flash cards, juggling. Late lunch at Chipotle. Free chips. A little of Courtney's chocolate. Missed Karl Narveson's recital. He said something about a part-time job. Typed in many changes to profs/grants. Typed in minor changes to pts of density. Small changes to Christmas letter. Will show to Julia when she gets back. Julia arrives tomorrow at 8:08pm. ============================================================== Sa 12/16/23 Strength, no running, stratch, tongue, flash cards, juggling. Went to the U and worked a lot on profs/grants, editing a lot of new stuff toward the end. Spent just a little time on pts of density, only making red marks on a few pages. Protein box at Starbucks. Back at home, had an Amy's, some of the salad, some yogurt, some milk, some of the chocolate that Courtney sent. Finished third time through Endeavour "Oracle". May watch a fourth time with Julia, when she gets back. Maxim wants to watch "Old Dads" with Bill Burr tomorrow. I'll probably join him. Finished laundry. Christmas letter is mostly done. I'll type in some red marks, and then let Julia read it. Went through about half of the file on Bryan Mosher's promotion. Not sure what a "contract full professor" is, but I'll likely vote in favor of the promotion. ============================================================== F 12/15/23 Went in to the U today, 6:45am bus. No running or strength. Did stretch, tongue, flash cards and juggling. Breakfast at Starbucks, lunch at D'Amico. D'Amico is pretty expensive. Eye appointment. Clean bill of health -- no macular degenration. Doctor said that zeaxanthin and lutein probably won't help much in *preventing* macular degeneration -- it can slow it down after it's started significantly, but, in my case, it hasn't started at all. He sees signs I'll eventually need cataract surgery, probably. Got new glasses prescription, but I'll probably make do with what I have. Apparently not much change in my eyes. Next appt 2 years. Doctor recommended reading glasses, pretty inexpensive and makes a big difference for small print. New printout of pts of density. Very few changes. Worked a lot on profs / grants. Developing some general theorems so that I don't repeat the same kinds of arguments over and over. For exmample, a general result about Pr[X_n=epsilon|T_n=na]-->Pr[X=epsilon], where, X_1,X_2,... is iid modeled on X, and where T_n=X_1+...+X_n, and where X has mean a. So there's a lot of reorganization going on, should take a few more days to settle down. Didn't meet Bernardo for lunch -- somehow he didn't get to the U until kind of late, and I had to catch a ride back with Maxim at 3. Tried out "Five Guys" restaurant. Good shakes, but not very healthy food. Watched the Newshour, but feel asleep! Canceled appointment to have someone from Comcast look at the TV. Seems to be working fine now. ============================================================== Th 12/14/23 Slow steep running for 13 minutes, no strength. Flash cards, stretch, tongue and juggling. At the library for about an hour. Finished redmarking pts density, had a look at an Economist. Finished scheduling all the emails for Dean Phillips calling to go out during my time in NZ. Should doublecheck that everything is set for 8am, and on the right dates. Need to check both scheduled emails and the email-snoozing. Did a little shopping. Amy's still on sale, so I got a bunch of them. Also some tea bags. Also more milk. Also bandaids. Alex came out and we met at OC at 3pm for pub pizzas. Finished off my gift card. Then we went for a walk at Purgatory Creek Park. Then he headed off for some shooting. Finished draft of the Christmas letter. Watched PBS Newshour. Interesting Canvas report about the band "Rush". Rush: Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart. Virtuosos. Peart died in 2020 from glioblastoma, just before the pandemic. Freewill ("I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose Freewill") Re-watched a little of "Oracle" episode of Endeavour. TV seems to be working again, so I canceled the Comcast appointment tomorrow. Should remember, if the problem happens again, to see if it's happening on all channels, or just PBS. Typed in all of the edits to pts of density and some of the edits to profs/grants. ============================================================== W 12/13/23 Strength, no running, flash cards, stretch, tongue and juggling. Got paperwork submitted for new title to the car that Maxim uses. The title is in my name. Paid sales tax of $1215.29. Wasn't expecting that. Didn't have time to get to the library. Rewatched some of Oracle, S7E1 of Endeavour. Spent whatever time I could on profs and grants. Also did a little on pts of density. Wrote to B Zhang about using Chebyshev to go from probabilities for an individual to probable distribution across the whole population. Scheduled a few more Dean Phillips calling messages, for while I'm away in NZ. Should have them all scheduled in a few more days, well before we leave. Made plans to visit Alex this coming Monday at noon for lunch. Should also go to metals recycling. Did finances today. The claim for Maxim's car appeared in my bank account. I wrote out a check for that amount plus the $2000 deductible and will give to G&S when I see them on Saturday. So the cost (to me) of the accident currently stands at $1215.29 + $2000. Had brief moment of panic, thinking that the return trip from NZ was booked on the 10th instead of the 11th. I also had an old note about plans to come back on the 13th, which I should probably have deleted a long time ago, so that added to the confusion. We will be leaving NZ on the 10th in Minneapolis time, but on the 11th in NZ time. My phone shows the 10th, but, I expect that, when we get to NZ, it will change to the 11th. Should double check all this with Julia, when she gets back. (She's in Italy until Monday.) Trouble with the TV. Comcast will send a technician on Friday. Probably need to replace the cable box. Picture and sound keeps cutting out, then back in. I probably spent 1.5 hours on the phone with people from Comcast. ============================================================== Tu 12/12/23 First day in a while without a lot on my schedule. No strength or running. Did stretch, tongue, flash cards and juggling. Caught the 6:45am bus to school. Worked a little on pts of density and a lot on profs chasing grants. Breakfast at Starbucks, protein box. Lunch at d'Amico was expensive (approx $15), because there was no vegetarian soup option. Scheduled several email messages to monthly callers, for the time that I'll be away in NZ. Need to do about 25 more before we leave. Caught a 698 bus back a little earlier than usual, to be home in time for my 4pm Zoom. 4pm, Zoom: Trevor Potter, former FEC (Federal Election Commission) chair, currently works at the Campaign Legal Center. American Promise President Jeff Clemens did introduction. Clements was very proud of successful ballot initiative in Maine to outlaw foreign money in Maine elections. The initiative is facing a court challenge. Trevor Potter was on the Colbert Report, see Youtube videos. On our zoom, he spoke about history of campaign finance laws, and about how Citizens' United (2010) came about. Citizens' United overruled Austin v Michigan Chamber of Commerce (1990). Problems started early, with Buckley v Valeo (in 1976). History should also mention some provisions Taft-Hartley (1948) anti-union act, which barred unions and corporations from making independent expenditures in support of or in opposition to federal candidates. Potter described how super-pacs (which have unlimited money) can be funded by "dark money" through certain kinds of 501c's. The 501c is named, but its donors are not. Watched BBC News and some of the News Hour. Zelensky spoke to Congress about the continued need for money. Delay to "secure our southern border". Continued redmarking pts of density and profs / grants. Tried piano. Got through Pachelbel Canon and Gigue. Made it most of the way through Moonlight first movement. ==============================================================
