Representations generated by tensors

The rank partition of a matroid determines when there is a set partition of its ground set into independent sets. We introduce two group representations in an effort to make sense of the relationship between the rank partition and vanishing of symmetrized monomial tensors. Through some examples we will survey what is known, what is not known, and what we hope to know about these representations.
