There is a simple-to-explain counting phenomenon involving roots-of-unity that seems to crop up unexpectedly all over combinatorics. This was first observed by Dennis Stanton, Dennis White and the speaker. This talk will define this phenomenon, and illustrate it by example. It will also hopefully discuss an open problem, regarding a conjectural example of the phenomenon.
