Patterns far from Equilibrium

Prof. Arnd Scheel

"Equilibrium is the most natural state" -- Aristotle and later Boltzman taught us that all physical systems eventually come to rest, the most likely state. Yet, everyday we encounter the most unlikely patterns in the world around us, marvelous patterns on animal coats, sand ripples, snow flakes, or the regular beating of our heart. I will show in a few examples how simple and sophisticated mathematics can help explain to us, why the world sometimes is simple -- and sometimes wonderfully complex.
