Sarah Patch works at GE Medical
in Milwaukee, WI, and holds a
Ph.D. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley.
She will give a presentation in
the IMA Industrial Problems Seminar
at 10:10am in Rm 570. She will
also give a more informal presentation
of some of the mathematical problems
that arise in medical imaging
at 2:30pm in Rm 570. This is a
chance to meet with Dr. Patch
to hear first hand about working
in industry, and to explore possibilities
for internships next summer. Unless
you have a class conflict, we
expect to see all of you at one
or both of these talks.

Implementing
Value at Risk Using Scenario Simulations
In recent years, Value at Risk
has been considered as one of
the important market risk measures
by financial institutions and
banks. We will talk about commonly
used techniques to estimate Value
at Risk. In particular, we will
discuss Monte-Carlo type simulation
and a more advanced technique,
Weighted Scenario Simulation.
Also we will touch some aspects
of active risk anlysis that are
closely related to the concept
of Value at Risk.
