Overview of Computer Labs

The School of Mathematics has computer workstations in offices and in labs for individuals to log in to. Machines dedicated to remote access and computations are also available.

Math classrom lab reservations can be made with Jan Minette.

Undergrad students with accounts can use VinH 314 and 5, while graduate students or faculty can use all department labs. Access to 270d and 314 is available 24 hours/day with a door code received with your account sheet.

Use a secure shell (ssh) or NX Client to connect remotely to computers.

Math Servers

Remote Shell Server

For remote access only. See our ssh guide.
Use these machines for quick file access, or checking mail. For long running jobs use computation servers.

birch.math.umn.edu

Computation Servers

Simulations that require more memory, or to run for a long time can use the compute servers. These machines are for research use only. See SSH, NX Client, Computation Tips guides.

  • pho-tai.math.umn.edu, 64 bit
  • superbee.math.umn.edu, 64 bit
  • viper.math.umn.edu, 32 bit

Use ssh page for remote access for a terminal session, file transfer or even a remote desktop using NX Client. See the computation tips page for techniques for controlling jobs.
