In Fall 2011 MATH 1271 Lec 050 (my lecture section), I taught by "flipping the classroom", a teaching technique in which lectures are viewed on video outside of class while skill-training is done in class. That semester, 132 of my (Lec 050) students took the final exam. Including all the lecture sections, 1074 students took the final exam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary The first column is a grade range. The second column is the percentage of students in Lec 050 whose final exam letter grade is in that range. The third column is the percentage of students in all lecture sections whose final exam letter grade is in that range. Lec 050 All ------ ------ A- or above 24.24% 17.60% B- or above 44.70% 43.39% C- or above 90.92% 87.34% D or above 94.71% 91.34% There seems to be some improvement, possibly, in part, because of the unusual teaching technique (flipping the classroom, mentioned above). Of particular note is the increase in students receiving A or A-, and the decrease in students receiving D or F. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw data for Lec 050 The first column is a letter grade on the final exam. The last column has the percentage of students with that grade. A 23/132 = 17.42% A- 9/132 = 6.82% B+ 4/132 = 3.03% B 17/132 = 12.88% B- 6/132 = 4.55% C+ 21/132 = 15.91% C 34/132 = 25.76% C- 6/132 = 4.55% D 5/132 = 3.79% F 7/132 = 5.30% total 100.01% ----------------------------------- Raw data for all lecture sections The first column is a letter grade on the final exam.
