In Spring 2012 MATH 1271 Lec 010 and 030 (my lecture sections), I taught by "flipping the classroom", a teaching technique in which lectures are viewed on video outside of class while skill-training is done in class. That semester, 238 of my (Lec 010 and 030) students took the final exam. Including all the lecture sections, 547 students took the final exam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary The first column is a grade range. The second column is the percentage of students in Lec 010 and 030 whose final exam letter grade is in that range. The third column is the percentage of students in all lecture sections whose final exam letter grade is in that range. Lec 010,030 All ----------- ------ A- or above 26.89% 23.40% B- or above 52.52% 55.76% C- or above 86.55% 87.02% D or above 92.86% 93.78% The differences are very small. A few more grades of A and A-, a few fewer of B+, B and B-. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Students in good standing In 32 lectures and 11 recitations, a quiz was given. Let's define a student to be "in good standing" if he/she attended at least 40 of those 32 + 11 = 43 classes, receiving a nonzero grade on those quizzes. In Lec 010 and Lec 030, of the 238 students, only 123 of them were in good standing. Among those 123, we have the following statistics: The first column is a grade range. The second column is the percentage of students in good standing whose final exam letter grade is in that range. A- or above 34.15% B- or above 66.67% C- or above 93.50% D or above 98.37% For flipping the classroom to be effective, it is paramount that students watch the recorded videos, and attend class. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw data for Lec 010 and 030 The first column is a letter grade on the final exam. The last column has the percentage of students in Lec 010 and 030 with that grade. A 33/238 = 13.87% A- 31/238 = 13.03% B+ 13/238 = 5.46% B 33/238 = 13.87% B- 15/238 = 6.30% C+ 17/238 = 7.14% C 45/238 = 18.91% C- 19/238 = 7.98% D 15/238 = 6.30% F 17/238 = 7.14% total 100.00% ----------------------------------- Raw data for all lecture sections The first column is a letter grade on the final exam. The last column has the percentage of students in all lecture sections with that grade. A 72/547 = 13.16% A- 56/547 = 10.24% B+ 40/547 = 7.31% B 98/547 = 17.92% B- 39/547 = 7.13% C+ 38/547 = 6.95% C 93/547 = 17.00% C- 40/547 = 7.31% D 37/547 = 6.76% F 34/547 = 6.22% total 100.00% ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw data for students in good standing Of the 123 students in good standing (as defined above), we have the following statistics: The first column is a letter grade on the final exam. The last column has the percentage of students in good standing with that grade. A 22/123 = 17.89% A- 20/123 = 16.26% B+ 10/123 = 8.13% B 21/123 = 17.07% B- 9/123 = 7.32% C+ 9/123 = 7.32% C 19/123 = 15.45% C- 5/123 = 4.07% D 6/123 = 4.88% F 2/123 = 1.63% total 100.02%
