In Spring 2014 MATH 1271 Lec 030 (my lecture section), I taught by "flipping the classroom", a teaching technique in which lectures are viewed on video outside of class while skill-training is done in class. That semester, 118 of my (Lec 030) students took the final exam. Including all the lecture sections, 524 students took the final exam. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary The first column is a grade range. The second column is the percentage of students in Lec 030 whose final exam letter grade is in that range. The third column is the percentage of students in all lecture sections whose final exam letter grade is in that range. Lec 030 All ------- ------ A- or above 22.03% 20.80% B- or above 50.00% 47.52% C- or above 77.97% 75.00% D or above 90.68% 90.27% In the "A- or above", "B- or above" and "C- or above" ranges, this shows a slight improvement, possibly, in part, because of the unusual teaching technique (flipping the classroom, mentioned above). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Students in good standing In 16 lectures and 11 recitations, a single quiz was given. Let's define a student to be "in good standing" if he/she received a nonzero score on at least 24 of those 16 + 11 = 27 quizzes. In Lec 030, of the 118 students who took the final exam, 76 of them were in good standing. Among those 76, we have the following statistics: The first column is a grade range. The second column is the percentage of students in good standing whose final exam letter grade is in that range. A- or above 25.00% B- or above 52.63% C- or above 81.58% D or above 94.74% For flipping the classroom to be effective, it is paramount that students watch the recorded videos, and attend class. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw data for Lec 030 The first column is a letter grade on the final exam.
