HOMEWORK PAGE +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If you are interested in joining the Facebook based study group for our course, you can find it by logging into Facebook and searching "math 4242 Spring 2009" otherwise here is a link directly to the site: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=47406727961. The group will be used for asking other classmates questions, getting in contact with your classmates and coordinating study groups. I (Brandon Whited) started a Facebook group similar to this last semester and it worked phenomenally, we usually had between three and 11 people show up to study groups and everyone benefited from it. Once you join if you have a questions post them on the wall. If you know an answer to a question that is on the wall, post the answer. Brendon will send out messages to everyone who has joined the group about the times and places of study groups. If you want to participate in study groups and none of the times and places work for you or you would just like more study groups, send me (group creator) an e-mail and I will make you an administrator. Then you can message everyone in the group and arrange your own study times and places. Thanks to Brendon for setting this up. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Assigned homework for Math 4242: Due Friday, Jan 30 p. 3, ex 1a,c,f p. 5, ex 1, 2, 3, 5a,b p. 9, ex 6, 7, 8a,c, 14, 15, 19, 25. p. 15, ex 1a,d,f, 2a,c, 3a,c, 5a,b. p. 19, ex 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22a,b,c. p. 22, ex 32b. ------------------------------------------- Due Friday, Feb 6 p. 24, ex 1a,b,c,d, 2a,b, 3a. p. 26, ex 10a,b. p. 30, ex 19a,b,c, 20a. p. 35, ex 1a,b, 2, 3a,b,d,e, 7a,b, 9a,b. p. 41, ex 24a,b,d, 25for working a,b,d in #24. p. 44, ex 32a,b,c. ------------------------------------------- Due Friday, Feb. 13 p. 45, ex 1g, 2, 6. p. 47, ex 17b, 23a,b, 24, 25c. p. 66, ex 1d,f, 2c,f, 7cb,d,g, 16. p. 70, ex 22b,c, 23a,e, 27a. p. 74, ex 1a,c,d, 5a-h p. 83, ex 2, 4a,b, 7a. p. 87, ex 1a,b, 2a-j, 9. ------------------------------------------- ============================================ REGARDING OUR FINAL: It is officially scheduled for Thursday MAY 14 at 1:30. Please write to me if you have a conflict with these times. There will be NO CLASS on Monday, May 4 (I will be at the Clay Research Conf. at Harvard). I will probably be off the internet from Saturday, May 2 up to Wednesday morning. I will be back Wednesday for class (NWA willing!) May 6 and also have office hours on Thursday to answer questions. Exam may include assigned hw problems, previous midterm exam problems, and problems done in class. The exam will cover what we covered in class up to p. 425. If we do additional material in class, it will NOT be on the Final. RULES: You may bring into the exam one sheet of 8.5 x 11'' paper, with anything you want written on ONE side. No electronics, magnifying glasses, or microscopes allowed. Here is an outline of what you should know: 1.Gaussian Eliminations, elementary and permutation matrices 2.Decompositions: PA or A=LU, LDV. QR, S\Lambda S^{-1}, Q\Lambda Q^{-1} 3.Inverses, determinants 4.Gram-Schmidt 5. Orthogonal and Symmetric matrices 6.Bases and orthogonal bases of vector spaces and subspaces, 7.Inner products, pos definite matrices 8.distance, orthogonal projection to a vector subspace, 9 kernel, range of A and A^T and relationships(dimensions, orthogonality) 10.Eigenvalues and vectors, special cases of orthogonal and symm matrices Wow! We learned a lot this term. If you want me to review in class any specific topic, let met know. Good Luck to everyone. ==================================================== ----------------------------------------------------- Last homework: Due Friday, May 1.
