The conference will be held during July 31-August 4, 2006. This will be preceded by an introductory workshop on using Macaulay 2, to be held July 24-July 29, 2006. Outline of the proposed program:
Introductory part: (1) Gr\"{o}bner bases (2) Monomial ideals and resolutions (3) Hilbert series and polynomials (4) Free resolutions and betti numbers (5) Toric varieties (6) Determinantal varieties
Recent Progress: (1) Moduli of quiver representations (2) Singularities of Schubert varieties (3) Algebraic statistics (4) Hypergeometric differential equations (5) Hyperplane arrangements
Limited travel funding for junior participants is available. Please contact Alexander Yong for funding requests. (closing date for requests, February 28, 2006).
Further details will be posted here as they become available. Or you may contact one of the organizers Ragnar Buchweitz, Greg Smith or Alexander Yong.
Here is a long list of housing/hotel options. Rates start from around $55 CAN/$45 US per day. Also look here.
Week 1: Each morning (9AM-Noon) there will be approximately 3 hours lectures on different aspects of computational and combinatorial commutative algebra (such as monomial ideals, free resolutions, sheaf/local cohomology, hyperplane arrangements, etc.). Most days will have a single theme, with one or two lecturers. Lectures will provide a general introduction to the topic with an emphasis on examples. The afternoon (2PM-5PM) will be spent in a tutorial with the participants working (in small groups) on examples and problems (using Macaulay 2) related to the morning lectures. The lectures will prepare questions for the tutorial ranging for very easy to open problems. Both the morning and afternoon sessions will be held the 2nd floor library/lecture room at the Fields Institute. We ask participants with laptops to please consider bringing them (preferably Wi-Fi enabled). Lecturers: (Monday, Monomial ideals) A. Yong, A. van Tuyl; (Tuesday, resolutions and betti numbers) G. Smith and R. Buchweitz; (Wednesday, sheaf cohomology) M. Stillman; (Thursday, hyperplane arrangements) G. Smith and G. Denham ; (Friday, Schubert varieties and special varieties) A. Woo and H. Abo.
