Systematic construction of Galois groups
Prof. Michael Harris, Univ. Paris VII

Abstract: Galois theory was developed as a means of studying
the roots of polynomial equations. Its results are very general
but in practice one has trouble finding polynomial equations
worth studying. Galois groups are provided most systematically
by topological invariants of algebraic varieties. The Langlands
conjectures single out especially interesting classes of
Galois groups, whose properties can be studied by means of
harmonic analysis as well as geometry.
