Math 4242  Applied Linear Algebra

Prerequisite:
Math 2243 (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations) or 2373 or 2573 (as suggested by the School of Mathematics)

  • Linear Algebra with Applications,  Otto Bretscher, 3rd Ed,  Prentice-Hall, Inc. (as used in the previous semesters, and also suggested by our course leader).
  • (as a reference, new book) by our own Professor Peter Olver (and Cheri Shakiban) here at UMN,  Applied Linear Algebra, ISBN: 0-13-147382-4, Prentice Hall, Inc. (released on Jan 10, 2005).
  • (as a reference, MIT's book)  by Professor Gilbert Strang (gs@math.mit.edu) at MIT,  Introduction to Linear Algebra (3rd Ed., 2003),  Wellesley-Cambridge Press.

Course Load:

There will be weekly homeworks (graded by a paper grader);  one midterm (Friday, March 11, during the normal lecture time),  and one final ( Friday, May 6; One-Hour ).

Grading:

Homework 30%;      Midterm: 25%;      Final Exam: 45%

A Note:

For such an upper-level undergraduate course, attending lectures and taking good notes are very important since the instructor could deviate from the textbook from time to time.  This is mainly to prepare you for future graduate courses.
