Math 5615H, Fall '03
Last changed: Oct 28, 2003.
Old news:
NEWS Oct 12: Assignments have been updated.
The C and D gradelines
were mistakenly set too high!
The adjusted gradelines are:
Gradelines for Test 1: p-top: 90
A 73
B 56
C 39
D 22
Avg: 55.6
Median: 58
Even with the correction, 6 people have D or F.
My offer to set up help sessions remains open.
We can discuss Test 1 individually.
So far, only 2 people have let me know they'd
be willing to meet for Help sessions!
NEWS Oct 7: Assignments have been updated.
NEWS Oct 6: After today's Test, I was asked to put the questions on the Web.
I'll do so, but only until Wednesday evening. Follow the link below.
NEWS Oct 3: Test 1 is Monday Oct 6. Chairs will need to be spread apart!
Someone noticed: In the 9/26 notes, page 4 line -2, where it says "edge length"
it should say " "radius" " (in the "radius" of a cube sense).
I am fairly confident I won't be called today for jury duty! See you in class...
NEWS Sept 30: A link to Old NEWS has been added, along
with Announcements that feature questions about Test 1.
PLEASE NOTE: The class notes for yesterday will also be used
as class notes for Wednesday!!
NEWS Sept 28: A link to notes for 9/29 appears below. I hope to
see you in class at 2:30 Monday! Check this site about 1:30!
NOTE! An important typo (someone sent email!) on the 9/26 notes,
page 1 line -7, has been corrected! Was 1/\eta, now \eta/2.
Assignments have been updated.
NEWS Sept 26a: Now we are "on call." This means I can be called
during the period 10 - 1, and have one hour to get to
the Jury Assembly room. So, I'll come to school Monday, and
possibly see you at 2:30.
Test1 Announcements: Look here for questions and answers
about Test 1
(2) What will be covered on Test 1?
Thru the alternate proof of 2.40, be able to quote
and make easy applications of 2.41 and 2.42.
(1) May we use books and notes?
No, tests are CLOSED-BOOK, CLOSED-NOTE,
NO CALCULATORS, NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES.
NEWS Sept 26: Class will meet today!! This time, Prof. Frank
will give the lecture!! I hope you see this in time!
NEWS Sept 25: Below: a link to class notes for Friday Sept. 26,
typed, in PDF format.
The class notes start from where we left off Wednesday, cover
some theorems in the book, and get us to an Intro to the alternate
proof of Theorem 2.40 that we'll start Monday. I hope you'll let
me know whether getting thru the class notes suggests they should
be shorter, longer or stay about the same. Friday's notes are
longer than 5 pages, because they looked light "light, chatty"
reading. Let me know!
NEWS Sept 23: I'll put notes on the Web, because they are done,
BUT, I'll be at the class tomorrow, because I don't have
to go to the Courthouse tomorrow! See you in class.
Notes for 9/24: link below.
NEWS Sept 22: Somehow, the updated assignment did not get to
the Web Friday. They're there now. I apologize for the delay.
Please work from the screen (don't try printing) for Monday's
notes. I'll type the rest, tho there may be lots of typos
and abbreviations!
NEWS Sept 21: Notes for Sept 22 have links below. They are in JPEG
format. The files are large. I suggest downloading them at a U
computer lab! They look better in Photoshop than in a browser too.
If you have questions about the Test coming up on Oct. 6, you may
ask by email, and I'll put (a version of) the question on the Web,
along with my answer. Thus you should check this site daily!
NEWS Sept 19: Assignments have been updated.
Please check your email, or check here about 1:30 Monday
to see whether I can make it to class then. Later Monday when
I know more about how the jury duty works, I let you know more.
The notes for Monday's lecture should be on the Web by Sunday evening.
The notes will refer to the book frequently!
