Rational functions and valuations on cones

Abstract

We discuss a viewpoint for proving certain rational function identities, involving geometry of polyhedral cones, or Hilbert series of semigroup rings.

We illustrate this with the cone geometry that explains an identity of D.E. Littlewood, and the ring structure that explains an identity of C. Greene. This is joint work with Adrien Boussiacault and Valentin Feray.
