The cyclotomic polynomial topologically

Gregg Musiker

Abstract

The cyclotomic polynomial is defined to be the minimal polynomial over the rationals for any complex primitive nth root of unity. Although well-studied, its coefficients are mysterious. We discuss a topological interpretation of these coefficients in terms of simplicial homology. This work utilizes oriented matroids and simplicial spanning trees.
