Some algebraic geometry of sandpiles

The Laplacian of a directed multigraph encodes the toppling rules for the abelian sandpile model on the graph. These rules can also be encoded as a system of polynomial equations---the lattice ideal of the Laplacian. We discuss the interplay between lattice ideals and the sandpile model.
