Math 5651: Basic Theory of Probability and Statistics

Syllabus: Fall 2006

Class Times and Location:
001 Lec: 10:10 am - 12:05 pm TTh, VinH 2;
002 Lec: 04:40 pm - 06:35 pm TTh, VinH 1.

Office Hours: TTh, 01:25 pm - 2:15 pm, or by appointment

Textbook: M.H. DeGroot and M.J. Schervish, Probability and Statistics, 3rd Edition.
We plan to cover Chapters 1-5 (excluding starred sections) and Sections 6.1 and 6.2.

Homeworks: There will be 7 homeworks due at the beginning of class on Tuesdays,
Sept 12, Sept 26, Oct 10, Oct 24, Nov 7, Nov 21, and Dec 5.
Late homework will receive less that full credit, and possibly zero credit.

Midterm Exams: on Thursdays,
October 5 and November 16, during class time.

Final Exam:
001 Lec: Monday, December 18, 10:30 am -12:30 pm, VinH 2;
002 Lec: Thursday, December 14, 04:40 pm - 06:40 pm, VinH 1.

Grading: Homeworks - 20% of the total grade for 6 (out of 7) best ones,
Midterm Exams - 20% for each one,     Final Exam - 40%.

Missed exams: Make-up Final exams will be given to students who have a valid reason for missing an exam. Such students must notify their instructor prior to the exam, and the reason must be documented. There will be no make-up Midterm exams. A proportional part of the score for the Final exam will be used instead for students who have a valid documented reason for missing a Midterm exam.

Incompletes: The grade of I can be assigned only to students who have taken and passed one Midterm Exams and who have a valid excuse for being unable to take the Final Exam.

Homework Assignment # 1 (due on Sept. 12):
Sec.1.4: #2, 4, 5; Sec.1.5: #4, 7; Sec.1.6: #2, 6.

The next HW assignments will be given later.
