Textbook: Sullivan: Precalculus. 7th
edition
Prerequisite: Precalculus 1 (Math 1051) or College Algebra (Math 1031).
Course content: This course covers Chapter 5-7 (omitting 6.2, 6.6, 7.5), Section 3.6, 3.7, 8.1, 8.3, 9.1-9.4, 10.1, 10.6, 10.7, 11.1-11.3. The core of this course is problem solving. Theoretical aspects of the material will be kept to a minimum; instruction will center on developing the tools and versatility with them to do the problems.
Teaching Assistant: Zhou, Wei (zhoux105@umn.edu).
Teaching Assistant: Shi, Yi (shixx055@umn.edu).
Teaching Assistant: Levin-Koopman, Jason (levin221@umn.edu).
Teaching Assistant: Matthew Creek (creek005@umn.edu).
Homework: Homework problems are listed on the syllabus. It is very important to do homework problems to be able to understand course material well. Homework problems are not turned in, so they are not graded.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given every week during the recitation section, except those weeks when midterm exams occur. The lowest quiz score will be dropped.
Exams: There will be 3 in-class midterm exams and a final exam. All the midterm exams will be given in the lecture section. I will keep the two best scores of the three in-class exams. Each exam is worth 100 points. The lowest score midterm exam will be dropped.
Calculator policy: Calculators are NOT allowed during examinations or quizzes. However, students may use them for homework problems.
Grading: The course grade will be based upon the sum of the scores of the weekly quizzes (total averaged to 100 points), of three midterm exams (100 points for each), and of the final exam (200 points). The lowest midterm exam will be dropped. Thus, there will be a total of 500 points.
Grading on curve will also be taken into consideration.
