On a practical application of set theory

James Swenson -- October 14, 2001

I'm pleased to announce that I am one of three winners in Dr. Crispin Sartwell's contest to define "seven." The contest is referenced in an article written by Dr. Sartwell, and published in the StarTribune on August 29, 2001 under the headline, "Field of math does not add up." The online home of the contest is http://www.crispinsartwell.com/math.htm, and results are announced and discussed in detail at http://www.crispinsartwell.com/winners.htm.

As a winner, I received the new album " Steers and Stripes," by country artists Brooks and Dunn, together with an extra-large T-shirt bearing the legend, " Crispin shud die," for which I extend to Dr. Sartwell the thanks I owe him.

I submitted the definition "{{{{{{{{}},{}},{}},{}},{}},{}},{}}" for which I claim no mathematical credit. I am, however, more than happy to claim the T-shirt and compact disc which came in the mail last Saturday. Let no one claim that the study of set theory is without practical application.
