"Image Processing and Math are Closed Allies of Computer Graphics - From 3D Sketching to 3D Digitization to Visualization"
Thursday September 30th, 12:20-1:10, Lind 409

Abstract
In this talk, I will introduce three on-going projects in graphics and visualization. In 3D scanning project (PointWorks), we employ a state-of-the-art laser scanner to three-dimensionally digitize outdoor environments and then develop algorithms and tools for interactively navigating through digital scenes with a variety of artistic stylizations. In digital design project (SmartPaper) we use interactive sketches for 3D design. In visualization project we visualize both surfaces and volume of a dataset by leveraging artistic drawing techniques. Through the talk, I will also show how image processing and math can do the magic for achieving unique graphics rendering and modeling effects. The PowerPoint slides for this talk are available at www-users.cs.umn.edu/~baoquan/temp/iPAWS_09302004.ppt.

Before...
Before and after the talk, Prof. Chen and his student Amit Shesh will provide an interactive live demonstration of the Microsoft 3D Sketching Tool discussed in the talk. This tool is an architecture design aid that allows the user to sketch on a palmtop TabletPC and render the drawing in 3D. Particpants will have the opportunity to see this cool new technology first-hand.
