Below are some of the Thursday worksheets I used in my section.

WRITE YOUR OWN *@#!%&* TEST!

This was a group activity we did the week before the second exam. Students were assigned a section in the book and asked to come up with one good test problem, plust the solution. The students had about 30 minutes in class to work on it. By thinking about what would make a good test question, I think the students got a better idea of what to expect on the upcoming exam, as well as reviewing a particular topic to come up with their question. Also, I think they learned how hard it is to come up with a good test question.

The Jigsaw Puzzle

This was a group activity we did in class to learn about Sec 3.6 on the Chain Rule. Each group was given 25 minutes to study a topic, then the groups were mixed up so that each new group had one member from the old group and each person was supposed to teach their new group what they learned in their old group. (Got all that?)

Directions for the Jigsaw Puzzle
Topic 1: The Chain Rule by Jacobians
Topic 2: The Chain Rule in Leibnitz Notation
Topic 3: The Implicit Function Theorem
Topic 4: Linear Approximations

Here are the Jigsaw pages as a printable pdf file

Sec 3.4-3.5: Partial Derivatives

These are the answers to the 6 worksheets for Sec 3.4-3.5 that we did in recitation. I was too lazy to type up the answers, so I scanned them in as jpeg pictures.

Sec 3.4
Page 1: Partial Derivatives
Page 2: The Non-Differentiable Function from Lab3A ... and the picture
This is a good problem to look at if you're having difficulty with the definition of the derivative.

Sec 3.5
Page 3: The Jacobian
Page 4: Linear Approximations and Differentials
Page 5: Tangent Planes
Page 6: Parametrizing the Earth's Orbit...and the website

Here are all the 3.4-3.5 worksheets as a printable pdf file.
